Get to Know... – Thomas Cane of Universe 01
Thomas Cane, known as Tom by most, is the leader of The Protectors and was born with the ability to control like his dad, Geoff. In the year 2997 he performed a mercy killing on Gemma after she lost her legs due to Matt's betrayal, thus earning him the power of force fields. A couple years later he killed Leo in self-defense giving him the abilities of wall-crawling and superspeed.
To his friends and family, his biological father and mother excluded, he is a kind and caring leader while to people who don't know him he seems lost and distant. His enemies know him as a cold and merciless killer, again his biological mother and father excluded. His parents know him better than anyone else on the planet.
To his parents he is all of the above, but at the same time they have seen his that the personalities don't mix. They've seen him change from caring and merciful to a cold-hearted murder.
This resulted in many problems for him where he repeatedly imprisoned them instead of killing them allowing them to escape and try to kill him again and again.
At the age of 10 he trained himself not to sleep in order to prevent the visions of terrible futures, however for the first few years this causes him to become increasingly tired forcing leadership of The Protectors upon Jack, Emily and Naomi.
When he eventually developed a way of completely negating the effects of not sleeping he was able to take control of the team and led them on a crusade on the aliens invading earth. However upon the birth of Emma he gave control of the team to Felix, Emily and Jack. Meanwhile he, Ralph and Darren began working on developing the robots.
When he was 23 he slept for the first time in thirteen years after a training simulation went bad and knocked him unconscious. During his period of unconsciousness he dreamt of a future where his entire team died in battle against unknown forces.
While at first he ignored the vision as just a fate that was unlikely to happen...that was until Emma recognized his description of the vision and his father asked to speak to him and then described the vision detail for detail. This sudden consistency between visions worried him as he and his dad always had different visions when he was younger.
The fact that all three Protectors who had control over time had the exact same vision worried him even more.
As everything about the vision pointed towards the year 3010, Tom decided to begin construction on the Time Machine, and trusting the vision that his father had as well as his father's "survive at all costs" attitude, Tom decided to bestow one final act of trust on his father and released him in secret to work on the Time Machine with Tom. Darren, Jack and Ralph were all sworn to secrecy on the matter as they would all be working in close proximity to him.
As his father began to work with him, Tom noticed a great change in his behavior from when he tried to kill him sixteen years earlier. Slowly he pieced together his mother's manipulative behavior and dug deeper into the Purge of Paris files to find that it had been his mother and not his father who had initiated the attack. As work on the Time Machine furthered Tom distanced himself from the project to begin working in the field and command posts of the team, particularly after a number of Protectors began to fall during missions.
It was during this time that Tom began to train Cameron up allowing for a much greater advancement of the team's infiltration techniques.
Once the others had finished the Time Machine, he, Emma and his dad used their time energy to ignite the engine of the machine, the resulting shockwave also caused Jack and Dylan's plane to crash resulting in Dylan's death.
In 3000, after dealing with the threat of Matt's uprising, Tom was able to successfully get the team back in time, well 75 of them anyways. On the way back the time machine began to breakdown forcing Tom to evacuate the craft, and crash the ship into 1997 with, unbeknownst to him, Jamie still being onboard.
During his time in the 20th and 21st centuries, Tom managed to build up a wealthy bank account, recapture his parents and keep on top with the ongoing Cydonian invasion. And on top of that he has the strain of keeping the reset wave in place to prevent the rest of the team from suddenly aging back into their age before traveling backwards in time.
By the time Tom makes it to 2009 he had five separate identity on the run simultaneously and used his ability to change his age to effectively control scientific advancement, the amount of press coverage of the Cydonian invasion and help Emily with her dreams and psychological problems. Towards the end of the year he organized a mission with Darren and Jack to travel to 3015 in order to create a material to successfully revive Kyle and Jamie from their Comas.
After Darren is shot, he bends time and successfully rescues Darren, however, he causes a chain reaction that cause the Time Machine to crash into 3001. He then proceeds to deal with helping Protectors who are captured by the robots and develops a crush on Mia (See Mia's Get to Know Page). After she dies in his arms he demolishes most of the Zoombian complex and figures out why the Time Machine broke, allowing him to repair it.
